Skeleton Wardrobe
Wardrobe of reclaimed wood inspired by traditional boat construction and steam-bending techniques
Our goal was make the experience of displaying and choosing clothes exciting. I led a group of four other students (Reet, Yuta, Madeleine and Alejandra) to explore boat building construction and apply the techniques to furniture building. The frames are made from construction grade two-by-fours, while the curved cross beams are of cedar. The design also reuses molds from a wooden boat.
To make the door structure as light as possible, the design takes advantage of counteracting tensile and compressive forces. The compressive forces of the bent ribs push against the tensile forces of the dowels.
